Chris paints with coffee. Yes, coffee, the same cup-of-Joe many of us enjoy everyday.
After a workplace injury ended a 25-year career as a Registered Nurse, Chris found he was okay at painting when in March 2023, on a whim, he put a paintbrush in the thickened, reduced coffee his wife had just brewed. Her father had once said about Kim’s insanely strong coffee, “you could float a horseshoe on this stuff!” Chris had never been into painting before this, but now his works can be found around the world! Was it the injury to his eyes or just the hi-powered coffee? We will likely never know.
Seeking inspiration, Chris spends a great deal of time at Waskesiu Lake, Prince Albert National Park, and Canmore in the Rocky Mountains. Observing the patterns of animals and the cycles of the seasons, he paints to capture the haunting essence of the land. His style is realistic with an abstract flair reliant on the gold in nature. Chris’ coffee paintings are of course monochromatic and never feature a blue sky or green grass, instead he layers the coffee to obtain the widest range of shadowed tones. Chris’ coffee works are set on a cradled panel, protected with a hard permanent and archival coating that will last forever.
