Garth Tansey
Garth Tansey is a lifelong Calgarian whose work reflects a deep connection to both nature and the evolving industrial landscape of his hometown. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology with a minor in Fine Arts from the University of Calgary, a combination that continues to shape his artistic vision blending an understanding of natural systems with an appreciation for form and design.
After experimenting with clay, wood, fabric, and plaster, Garth found his true medium in metal. Drawn initially to the raw energy of welding, he soon discovered that steel could be shaped into surprisingly delicate, organic forms. His sculptures often birds and flowers emerge from reclaimed materials, particularly up-cycled cutlery sourced from thrift stores. The natural curves of spoons and forks lend themselves beautifully to the contours of sparrows, magpies, robins, and blooming petals.
Garth’s work explores the harmony between the industrial and the organic, transforming discarded metal into pieces that capture movement, grace, and a quiet spark of life.
