Guy Cranston

Growing up on the East Coast of Canada, Guy now currently resides in Nova Scotia.

Being a member of a diverse and creative family, Guy has been influenced by art and artisans all his life.
A background in painting and woodturning led Guy to create his distinctive folk-art bird sculptures. Capturing humour, character, mannerisms and movements, each sculpture has a life of it’s own, tells a story, and marks a fleeting moment. 
Six years ago, Guy began working with wire to create three dimensional pieces and since then, his individuality has developed with each new piece pushing  creative boundaries. During this time, Guy learnt the additional skills of brazing, welding, annealing, planishing, that also come into play on most pieces.
Guy has developed a unique style. There is no other artist in the world, who does quite like what he does.
Adding colour to otherwise drab and a limited palette for wire was a challenge. He knew anodized coloured wire existed but it was hugely expensive and a LOT of wire is used in each piece. By a stroke of luck a large cache of wire availed itself that contained 2000 lbs. in about 40 colours.
When it’s gone, it’s gone! Lucky for us, that will be some time!.  Guy combines a fairly simple processes into a highly visual impactful result. 

"My Dad loved to play around in his workshop and both my twin brother and I were never far from wood chips and sawdust. I’ve always loved tactile work and enjoyed all kinds of woodworking.  My birds are a natural progression of that journey.  The birds are an unending source of inspiration and no two of my pieces are the same. They make me laugh and people’s eyes light up every time they walk into a gallery or home."
