Hugh Egener
Hugh Egener is a stone bear sculptor residing in both Calgary, AB and Nakusp, BC. After retiring from a 33 year career in the Canadian Forces, Hugh started his second career as a sculptor in 2016. He became fascinated with wildlife after a military exercise in the high Arctic in 1977, where he encountered Muskox, polar bears, and Arctic fox. Primarily self-taught he calls his style, ‘block abstract’, with an emphasis on motion, strength, and character. Each piece tells a unique story, while his bold and edgy style suggests form muscle and movement bringing the sculpture to life. Hugh has conducted workshops for Nakusp students, adults and military veterans (PTSD), and his works have been collected and sold throughout the world.
