Kevin Peters
Kevin Peters is a self-taught stone carver who has always found his inspiration at home, within the mountains. He lives on his ranch on Wild Horse Mountain in the Southern Caribou, British Columbia, Canada. He started carving as a teenager, in the basement of his parents’ home. Amid the work on the family farm, he found time to develop his skill, and at the age of just 16 his first piece was sold in a local art gallery in Abbotsford, BC. Since 1983, Kevin has succeeded in bringing his wildlife surroundings to life in stone. From otters to moose, bears to eagles, it is his passion to capture all animals from sea to sky. Working in a range of materials, primarily soapstone, alabaster, and pyrophyllite stone as well as marble, limestone, and antler; Kevin carves directly from a single piece of stone releasing the image he envisions in the material without the use of drawings or pictures. He emphasizes the vitality, tactility, and movement of his forms with a characteristic attention to detail. His mastery of the material enables him to create layers of texture producing sensuous displays of feathers, fur, skin, or musculature with outstanding realism. Such detailing in stone and bronze is rarely seen, and has made Kevin a leading wildlife artist in Canada. His talent has propelled him into the international market; his pieces can be found around the world with a strong collection of work found in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Holland, and China.
