Martine Chassé

Picture
Martine Chassé is a contemporary Quebec painter, from Sainte-Marie en Beauce.

Following her training in administrative sciences at the University of Ottawa, she began a self-taught artistic journey. From the top of her house perched on the heights of the Chaudière Valley in Beauce, she discovered the singularity of the landscape that surrounds her. Her interest in painting arose in this place, where rivers, plains, valleys and forests rendezvous. She quickly realized painting would be more than just a hobby, and that's why she has been working professionally since 2008 as a full-time artist.

Expressionist in style, she is very interested in the work of Canadian artists such as Lawren Harris and Franklin Carmichael of the famous "Group of Seven". Roaring colors, sometimes tawny, applied in large keys cause a dazzling happy and daring outcome.  Intense and  vibrant, her works surprise and bring a new look on the landscape by the almost graphic representation that is core to her style.  The chiaroscuro (the treatment of light and shade) she creates produces an atmosphere that leads us to a feeling of calmness, tranquility, and healing that we seek, somehow, in our frantic lives. Painting is her language, a mode of expression. Over time, she has found that this artistic approach is in fact a process in constant evolution. It's a long journey that allows a better knowledge of oneself. Each day experienced brings to this approach, a nuance, a different shade as subtle as it is. She understands that it is the sum of our experiments that creates us, defines us and reveals us to ourselves, our own unique and authentic nature. Ineluctably, it is all this baggage which is transposed in its creation.

Martine was the recipient of the Grand Prize at the Desjardins Marius Barbeau Art Competition in 2012. She also joined as a signatory member of the Institute of Figurative Arts (IAF) in April 2018. Her works are part of several private and public collections in Quebec, Ontario and the United States. And now she is in Canmore Alberta at Fallen Leaf Gallery.
