Patrick Imai
Patrick Imai is a self-taught artist who has carved for more than 40 years. He initially carved in wood, whittling small figures and animals, then in the late 90’s he tried carving soapstone. He was captivated by the colour and texture of the finished soapstone, and has since worked in serpentine, alabaster, selenite, and marble. Patrick has a passion for carving bears seeking to capture movement and emotion in stone.
He is a member of the National Capital Network of Sculptors, and Arteast. His sculptures have been part of many significant exhibitions including the Museum of Nature – nature into sculpture, The Shenkman Art Centre – mosaic, and St. Brigid’s Centre for the Arts, as well as many private collections across Canada, the United States, and throughout Europe.
Born in Toronto, Patrick by the age of 10 was already an avid carver searching for the right subject and medium. Hiking, and exploring the forests, canoeing and camping along lakes and rivers, Patrick developed a strong connection to nature and wildlife. He is passionate about bears, and has travelled throughout Canada from Coast to Coast, and North and South.
His work reflects on his travels and life experiences, exploring the relationship between humans, families and nature. Personifying the bear and giving each bear their own unique voice became a fascination for Patrick. Through his work, he wants people to see themselves strongly connected with life, family and nature.
