Valerie Speer
Valerie finds inspiration in capturing moments of natural beauty through my paintings. Whether it's the play of dramatic light, breathtaking vistas, or the intensity of storms, that I am driven by the emotions evoked by these encounters with nature. With a career spanning back to 2002, she proudly holds Signature status with the Federation of Canadian Artists and currently leads as president of the Rosebud Art Collective.
She often depicts immense skies and dramatic weather systems on the prairies, with roads to wander down and into her paintings. Her mountain scenes evoke feelings of solitude in places of stunning grandeur with lingering light on peaks or still reflections on lakes. Valerie depends on getting out in nature to be recharged, finding a peaceful equilibrium for herself to reflect these experiences in her work.
Using simplicity of line, play with light and shadow and gradations of colour, she invites the viewer to embrace the calm she feels in her dreamlike paintings and to linger here.
With training in Visual Arts, Valerie has painted professionally since 2002. Being inspired by Lawren Harris and the Group of Seven at the onset of her career, Valerie incorporated a simplicity of shape and form that has allowed her to communicate her sense of place through her art.
